Mary Philpott- Stratford, Ontario, Canada BFA- University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Mary's tiles are made from porcelain stoneware. Each is carved, made into a mold, and hand-pressed. Multiple firings and layers of transparent jewel-toned glazes that are applied meticulously by hand give the tiles a unique look. They are functional for backsplashes, fireplaces, and as decorative tiles.
Mary is honored to be a member of the Roycrofters At Large Association, based in East Aurora, New York.
"My work foceses on decorative carved imagery on vases, platters and tiles. The imagery is inspired by narrative mythology, Medieval illuminations, and carving and heraldry."
Color variation and the hand-pressed look of the tile in edges and thickness are an inherent part fo the process and are desired. All tiles will craze (crackle) over time, and each is a unique work of art.
