The Four Elements is one of Pewabic's first contemporary-era series, created in the early 1990's by Pewabic designer Genevieve Sylvia. The concept of the Four Classical Elements dates back to antiquity and has root in many religious, spiritual, and philosophic traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Greek philosophy and astrology.

The 12 signs of the Zodiac are divided into groups of the Four Elements. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are the Water signs, and are associated with emotion and intuition. In divinity tarot, the suit of Cups is associated with Water.
